Preparing for Your CT Scan

Preparation depends on the type of CT scan you're having. For some scans, you may need to fast for 4-6 hours beforehand. For contrast-enhanced studies, you may need blood work to check kidney function. You'll receive specific instructions when your scan is scheduled.

What to Expect During the Procedure:

  • You'll lie on a table that slides into the CT scanner
  • The scanner is open at both ends and well-ventilated
  • You'll need to remain still during the scan
  • The technologist will give you breathing instructions
  • Most scans take 10-30 minutes depending on the area being examined

Important Note About Contrast

Some CT scans require contrast material to enhance visibility of certain structures. If you have kidney problems or allergies to contrast material, please inform your doctor before the scan.
